Remote Sensing Lab 5

Goal and Background

In this lab, we learned about spectral signatures of several images of surface features captured by satellite. We analyzed them specifically by working with interpretation and measurement techniques. We also learned how to capture spectral signature and perform analysis on them to determine if the passed our spectral separability tests after graphing them. In the later part of the lab, we learned how to analyze band ratios to determine the health of vegetation.

Methodology

I first opened a new Erdas Imagine window and created a lab 5 folder. Then, I opened the image: eau_claire_2000.img image. After doing this, I was instructed to collect spectral signatures from each of the twelve materials and surfaces provided in the lab exercise. To do this, I clicked on the drawing button, polygon, and then drew a shape on each surface I desired. I then clicked on raster, supervised, and signature editor. Once the signature editor was opened, I was able to graph the spectral signature data to compare. I then clicked on create new signatures and then display mean plot window. This allowed me to visualize a graph of the spectral data. I then clicked the button: change between single and multiple signature mode button. This allowed me to see each individual spectral signature side by side in the same window.
For the next part of the lab, I brought in the image: ec_cpw_2000.img into a new viewer in Erdas. I then clicked on Raster, and then Unsupervised, and NDVI. I then created an NDVI subfolder in my Lab 5 folder. I then used the select function, highlighted the NDVI, and ran it. I saved the result in my lab 5 folder. After this, I opened a new ArcMap and connected to my lab 5 folder. I added the NDVI that I created to the ArcMap and changed the symbology to reflect 5 different classes showing the level of vegetation in Eau Claire coutnty.

Results
This is a snippet of the spectral signatures graphed from two surface features in the first part of the lab.
This is a snippet of all of the spectral signatures together in the first part of the lab.

I created this map from an NVDI of Eau Claire County.
